You can use acetone or paint thinner interchangeably to make epoxy thinner. There's no "rubbery" about it. Received 1 Like on 1 Post. CrossfireProps Oct 26, Replica Props 2. Superb fuel proofer. Use that on a small cup of already mixed epoxy and it will get to almost the consistency of water but you have to brush it on quickly because the heat definitely will make it cure much, much faster. This process is done by lowering the viscosity state of being thick in consistency.

How to Thin Epoxy – Steps and Tips for Thinning Epoxy forum? I am just wondering if you guys have ever noticed when mixing Epoxy with Denatured Alcohol that the epoxy hardens quicker than normal? However, there are a few downsides to using a solvent to thin epoxy.

I discovered by accident recently that one can clean off uncured epoxy by using denatured alcohol, also commonly used as a fuel for alcohol.Posted December 27,

There are two ways to reduce viscosity in epoxy resin, one is heat, the other is the use of solvents. Solvents such as denatured alcohol.Has anyone used Isopropyl Alcohol instead of Denatured Alcohol to wipe down Epoxy resin in between coats?

I just saw an interesting tip for thinning epoxy resin with denatured alcohol, and as I've always found epoxy resin to be rather thick and.So be sure to follow the general rule of thumb by mixing the thinner at a ratio of

This is usually recommended over acetone or any other solvents. Denatured alcohol is effective in thinning epoxy because it does. That's really interesting and, as you obviously have experience using West epoxy which I first came across when building dinghies, you're probably right.

Well, it worked just fine, though it did slow down the cure time I'm fine with this, as I find epoxy tends to kick a lot quicker than polyester.

This means that one gallon of acetone is enough to thin 10 gallons of epoxy.

Adding solvents reduces some favorable qualities of cured epoxy such a strength, moisture resistance, and so on.

Thus, bad coverage causes the resin to cure improperly by creating pockets of air.

Occasionally I've strengthened engine boxes with triangulated balsa but never fuel proofed a single one.

This is because epoxy cures quite fast, so you need to organize your things first before you do the mixture of the hardener and resin.

Not all types of resin can be used for every application though, as certain resins are only graded for surface applications….

As soon as the epoxy touches the warm wood, it will begin to thin.

Just my opinion but why would you want to use epoxy adhesive for fuel proofing models in the first place?

Now, you need to work fast, as the epoxy resin will start to thicken as soon as it begins to cool down.

Epoxy is an odd bird, unlike urethane resins, the hotter an epoxy gets the thinner it becomes, you can heat the individual components to thin it out but it will decrease your pot life

The bottom line is if you need to thin your epoxy for any reason, use the heating method and not the solvent method.

Apparently the canoes were pretty classy ones used for competition so they could have been either polyester cheap or epoxy expensive.

However, just pop it into the microwave for a couple of seconds and the viscosity becomes low enough to be able to pour it.
